Delivered by Herefordshire's a Great Place and funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England, Hidden Gems will bring arts, heritage, rural communities, and digital technology closer together.

This brand new grant scheme asks people to identify hidden gems of heritage and work with communities, artists, heritage experts and digital specialists to creatively tell the gem's story.

Nine grants of up to £12,000 are available between 2018 and 2020. Four grants will be awarded in 2018. Hidden Gems will run again in 2019.

What counts as a Hidden Gem?

Your 'hidden gem' could be a building, open space, a secret place, a collection of objects, unheard stories, songs, traditions or memories - it's up to you! What's important is that you tell us what makes the heritage special; how you'll use arts to raise its profile; how you'll get the community involved; and how your project will use digital technology.

We'd love to see bold projects that challenge rural stereotypes, or remix and respond to traditional heritage in new ways.

How do you apply?

On this website you'll find all the information you need to apply for Hidden Gems funding - including the application form and detailed guidelines.

Applications and supporting documents must be submitted to greatplace@ruralmedia.co.uk before 6pm on August 12, 2018.

Winners will be announced in September 2018.

If you're granted funding in 2018 you will have nine months to complete your project.

Herefordshire's Hidden Gems grant scheme is not only open to Herefordshire-based arts or heritage groups, and that’s because we want everyone to care about and get involved in culture.

You don’t strictly need to be within the county border either. What's most important is that your Hidden Gems project directly benefits people living in Herefordshire.

We accept applications from formally recognised organisations including charities, trusts, registered companies, schools and colleges, and statutory bodies including town, parish or community councils.

If you are a voluntary or community organisation you must be one of the following:

  • A registered charity
  • Constituted group or club
  • Community interest company (CIC)
  • Social enterprise

Unfortunately we cannot accept applications from:

  • Individuals
  • Sole traders
  • Informal or non-constituted groups
  • Organisations based outside of the UK
  • Applications made by one organisation on behalf of another

If you are an individual or from an informal group but you'd still love to be involved in a Hidden Gems project, we suggest a few ways forward...

1. Find out if eligible organisations in your area are applying for Hidden Gems funding, and see if you can get involved in their project.

2. If you can't find local projects, you could contact eligible organisations directly to drum up interest and together apply for Hidden Gems funding.

If you are still unsure about whether you can apply for Hidden Gems grant funding, you call us on 01432 344039 or email greatplace@ruralmedia.co.uk.

For braille transcription, large print, or audio transcription of the Hidden Gems guidelines and application form please contact the Herefordshire's a Great Place team on 01432344039 or greatplace@ruralmedia.co.uk.
